This project focuses on the design, manufacture, and testing of an open-source desktop Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mill that provides easy machining access to beginners and hobbyists working on small-scale projects. It prioritizes affordability and manufacturability without the use of pre-existing CNC equipment, while still producing accurate and precise parts. With a working range of 6.75in x 6.5in x 5.25in, the machine has an accuracy of ± .002in and a low base cost under $1,700. The design is open-source for those who wish to build the mill themselves, including a user manual and detailed mechanical and electrical assembly instructions. The machine is accessible to WPI mechanical engineering students through the teaching lab. The project was a success, demonstrated by a number of functional parts made on the mill and an array of accuracy and feed rate tests.
