Virtual Reality Eye Tracking For Ocular Conditions
PublicMillions of people around the globe suffer from eye conditions that affect their daily lives (CDC, 2020). Many of the conditions exist since birth or result from a medical emergency. One such condition is loss of a part of one’s field of vision and can have a catastrophic impact on everyday activities such as crossing the street or driving a car. This IQP seeks specifically to aid patients by developing design concepts for a virtual reality (VR) device with a head-mounted display to correct the field of vision loss. The IQP also seeks to analyze the viability of VR for other eye conditions such as convergence insufficiency, amblyopia, and strabismus amongst others. Background research for this IQP consisted of analyzing academic journal articles relevant to the eye conditions for which we sought to find VR solutions. We chose the engineering design process for the hardware platform design, which led us to choose an iterative style, the Scrum Agile Methodology. A survey and several interviews were conducted to garner feedback on the design criteria and constraints that the team had brainstormed. Convenience sampling was employed for the survey which was sent to WPI students and family members of the authors. The interviews were conducted with members of the medical faculty at Boston Children’s Hospital with a specialization in ophthalmology.
