The purpose of this MQP was to evaluate preventative lipid-lowering therapy after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) at UMass Hospital. Coronary artery bypass grafting is a palliative operation for patients when their atherosclerotic process has progressed to the point of significant impaired blood flow to the heart. Several studies have demonstrated that the long-term use of statin therapy (lipid-lowering drugs) in reducing patient's cholesterol as a secondary prevention method demonstrates a significant reduction in the risk of coronary events. Secondary prevention of lipid management in the post-operative CABG patient has had little study. Our study showed that despite clear evidence showing the benefits of lipid-lowering drugs, only 42 % of patients are prescribed lipid-lowering drugs after CABG.
