Synthesis & photochemistry -- 5-cyano-3-phenyl-and 3- cyano-5-phenyl-1,2,4-thiadiazole
PublicProcedures were developed for synthesis of 5-cyano-3-phenyl- 1,2,4-thiadiazole and 3-cyano-5-phenyl-1,2,4-thiadiazole. Both pathways involved the synthesis of the ethyl 5-or 3-phenyl thiadiazole carboxylates followed by conversion of the ester to the amide and dehydration of the latter to the cyano derivatives. The 3-cyano isomer had not yet been previously reported in the literature. The 3-cyano and 5-cyano derivatives exhibited absorptions in the UV at 227 and 282 nm and at 242 and 298 nm. Both compounds undergo inefficient photofragmentation resulting in the formation benzonitrile.
