Although the Common Loon has unique vocalizations, there is a lack of research on how its syrinx structure contributes to these calls. Additionally, there is one vocalization that only males produce, so it is worth investigating if this has a structural underpinning. This project aims to lay the foundation for future research on the structural underpinnings of the Common Loon’s unique vocalizations, by offering a µCT imaging methodology to observe and analyze loon syrinx morphology. With the protocol offered in this project, gender differences and other interests can be explored.
