Glycoprotein suicide in the proteasome

Public

Paramyxoviruses are enveloped, negative-stranded RNA viruses that include such pathogens as Measles virus, Mumps virus, Parainfluenza virus and Newcastle disease virus (NDV), the focus of this Major Qualifying Project. Experimenting with co-expression of viral proteins HN and F from NDV and from other paramyxoviruses enabled us to hypothesize that heterologous co-expression of HN and F proteins result in down-regulation of HN expression. We conclude that this down-regulation is due to the misfolding of HN and its subsequent degradation in the proteasome.
