UTRECHTSEWEG 98 B ARNHEM March 12 1949 ARNHEM (Holland) Dear Mr Brown, As a visitor of the Leipzig Fair I had the opportunity of paying a visit to Mrs Sack, the wife of an old friend of yours, Dr Hans Sack of Leipzig. She told me that her husband is in prison since the last days of Sept- ember 1948. This poor man should have gone to the Western zone long ago, but he thought as he was no politician, he could manage his firm in peace under the Communist System of Eastern GErmany. I have known Dr SAck for many years as my firm, N.V.Louis Nagel & Co of Arnhem, is his agent for the Netherlands since 1879. I know him as a first-class gentleman, a very hard worker, a good husband and father and a good manager for his workmen. Last year the Russians ordered him to con- struct a complete potato harvester. He and 12 of his workmen were given as extra pay 1 lb of butter per month. This is indeed a great help as the food situation in Eastern Germany is very bad. By the middle of September 1948 the new machine was ready and within 2 weeks Dr Sack was arrested. They found on his desk a cut of a paper from Western Germany. On this paprer was mentioned that a workman in U.S.A. has to work one hour for getting a good meal, and that in Russia a good workman had to work 3 hours for a similar meal. This was a great offence! A second offence which was perhaps still worse was the following. The firm of Dr. Sack has sold some machines to farmers and made an agreement to get as extra payment extra food for the factory-canteen. He did this, as his work people are also only getting amall portions of food at home. He is now accused that by this deed (over)
