UV scanning of parchments

Public

The aging of medieval parchments has resulted in a layer of mold that makes the text unreadable. The main method currently used to read moldy parchments is ultraviolet illumination because it effectively enhances the contrast between the ink and parchment. The purpose of this project was to retrofit a scanner with ultraviolet light in an attempt to produce a digital copy of the parchments. The digital images acquired will help preserve the parchment by reducing handling and hazardous ultraviolet exposure.
