10. De Saussure's Ascent of Mont Blanc
Public DepositedThis water-color depicting "De Saussure's ascent of Mont Blanc in 1787" was published in 1828. It reproduces an image of Horace-Bénédict de Saussure's earlier attempt to climb the peak: "Montée de Mr. Saussure sur la cîme du Mont Blanc au mois d'août 1785," attributed to "Grundmann del." and printed by Johann-Peter Lamy. Saussure holds an alpenstock as a handrail as he emerges from behind the serac, block of ice, at the center of the frame.
