Lateralization in Australian Magpie behavior

Public

In most vertebrates, the brain is lateralized such that each hemisphere of the brain is better suited to serve specific functions. In this study, I investigated behavioral evidence of brain lateralization in the Australian magpie. I found that birds that use their left eye more also alarm call more frequently in response to human approaches. Also, I observed that juvenile birds will beg for food on the right side of an adult significantly more frequently than on the left side.
