A Novel Tungsten Thermal Field Emitter

Public Deposited

The Schottky emitter in its present form has remained unchanged for many years. The current design has persisted due to its simplicity and clever use of the technologies present at the time of its invention. In this paper a new design will be introduced, taking advantage of cutting-edge femtosecond photomachining technologies that allow for novel manufacturing methods unattainable in the past. These new manufacturing methods aim to increase emitter lifetime by up to three times, as well as provide more accurate assemblies necessary for current demanding applications, e.g., total concentricity under 10 μm. General fabrication methods and ultra-high vacuum creation methods necessary for production of Schottky emitters are included, as well as a review of field emission theory, laser theory, and vacuum physics which are explored for background reference.
