Monday Jan. 12 1948 Showed Charley Stone the belt device and mower drive proposed for 101 tractor. He thinks we should build a mower and revise one of our 101 tractors to try it on. I suggestd we also adapt a plow and cultvator to the tractor which we will rebuild. To rebuild means incorporating the new power life and implement attaching members Bill Cade has on his layouts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At theRichardson Mfg. Co. we built 50 of these spreaders forDeer &CO which weresold to Deer customers. This was in summer of 1911. The idea took like wildfire but many weaknesses developed. I came toDeere Oct 16 1911 and immediately set out to redesign the spreader completely. So spreaders were built and shipped to Kansas for test under Frank Raisback (Railsback). By April, 50 spreaders a day were being built. 100 per day in June and by mid summer 150 a day. 23000 were built the first year!!! Axles & gear cases broke and other weaknesses developed. But we got the best of the troubles by hard work and the spreader proved to be a real sensation. I worked out the directions for setting up spreader by a series of progressive illustrations of thevarious stages. It was the first one of its kind Deere Co. had done.
