open in viewerThe prevalence of neck injuries and basilar skull fractures in motorsports caused many sanctioning bodies in top-tier auto-racing divisions to mandate the use of head and neck restraints. Current devices inhibit drivers from exiting the car in emergencies, such as a fire or situation where emergency medical personnel are needed. The Motorsports Safety group designed and prototyped a new head and neck restraint device that can be removed easily while wearing a racing helmet by releasing a wing via a quick release mechanism. Evaluation of the prototype demonstrated that the time to remove the device via the quick release was statistically less than the time to remove a traditional device.
