THURSDAY JAN. 13, 1949 George and Lucy left at 9 this morning. This letter from Amy written Tuesday afternoon came this monring. " I know you and Elise are eager for news each day though there does not seem much to report. Mother, we felt yesterday afternoon, was loosing ground and she looked badly but today she looks like herself and enjoyed her meals even thought her breathing is irregular (what is called Chain-Stokes breathing) She (Cheyne-Stokes Breathing) sleeps most of the time but when we speak to her, she awakes with a smile and says she is comfortable and everything is alright. It was touching to have her say to the nurse this morning when asked if she were comfortable, "I am and I havn't a single trouble." Her desire still is to save people trouble and she never askes for a thing...The day nurse leaves at8P.M. and I sit with mother until the night nurse arrives at 11. I usually succeed in getting Kate to bed by middle evening and then she is the one to get up early in the morning and see the night nurse when she leaves at 7AM. The day nurse comes at 8... Yesterday we thought the end must come soon and now today we wonder if mother won't continue as she is for some time, no one can say. Any way I intend to stay on in definately for this is my place."
