Analysis and optimization of GOES-8 image processing algorithms

Public

Currently NASA has Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) in orbit over the United States. The weather data from the satellites are processed with a program written in IDL, however this program does not operate within NASA's real-time constraints. The three functions that are causing a significant slowdown in the program are color conversion, interpolation, and fast Fourier transforms. The goal of this project was twofold: to reconstruct the algorithms and attempt to optimize them.
