Steam Reforming of Biodiesel By-Product Glycerol
PublicDownloadable Content
open in viewerGlycerol is a by-product of the transesterification reaction used to produce biodiesel. Over the past decade, the production of biodiesel has greatly increased resulting in an oversupplied glycerol market and a reduction of its value. The biodiesel industry can add value to their glycerol by-product by steam reforming it to produce hydrogen. This project simulates glycerol steam reforming in an industrial size fixed bed reactor using computational fluid dynamics to understand its transport limitations and commercial feasibility.
