Analyzing Voice over IP wireless network performance

Public

The goal of this report is to explore the performance limits of a VoIP system operating over an 802.11b wireless network. Using traffic characteristics modeled from the free Internet telephony application Skype, VolP voice streams were simulated. It was found that no more than 18 voice streams can operate simultaneously on the WPI wireless network before quality of service becomes intolerable. This is attributed to queue overflow at the wireless access point resulting in dropped packets.

  • This report represents the work of one or more WPI undergraduate students submitted to the faculty as evidence of completion of a degree requirement. WPI routinely publishes these reports on its website without editorial or peer review.
