Optimizing coagulant conditions for the Worcester water filtration plant
PublicThe Worcester Water Filtration Plant currently uses alum as its primary coagulant. In this project, we compared the effectiveness of alum to several polyaluminum chlorides based on removal of particles and organics through filtration. We designed a bench scale sand filter, conducted filtration experiments, and measured effluent turbidity, particle counts and total and dissolved organic carbon. The results showed that PC-101 was most effective at particle removal overall. It was also the most cost effective coagulant.
