Design of tuck-away manual wheelchair brakes

Public

Current wheelchair braking systems often intersect with the propulsion paths of the user and may cause injuries to the hands. Tuck-away brake designs eliminate this problem, however, presently available designs are inconvenient to use and can require considerable adjustment. Three innovative styles of "tuck-away" brakes were designed, manufactured and tested at WPI and with users at the Massachusetts Hospital School. These brake designs include a bicycle brake, modified sliding toggle brake, and a modified Quadra design. After testing these designs we have concluded that the modified Quadra design best meets most of the project's functional requirements.
