Downstream Processing: Catalyst Separation

open in viewerThe catalysis of reactions has become a prevalent practice in the pharmaceutical industry. Two methods for organometallic rhodium catalyst recovery from a waste stream were investigated: electrodialysis and solvent combustion. Burning the solvent and dissolving the ashes in acids proved to be the most effective method. Based on the three acids and four molarities tested, 12M HCl proves to be the best acid to dissolve the ash in to create RhCl. This rhodium salt can then be further separated.
