Development of a Flame Spread Screening Tool For Fiber Reinforced Polymers
PublicDownloadable Content
open in viewerFiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) are of growing interest in building construction due to their customizability. To be used in a building, FRPs must undergo full scale fire testing to be classified per the International Building Code which determines where materials may be used in a building. Full-scale testing is costly and may impose significant economic penalties for materials that do not attain the desired rating. This project developed an initial form of a flame spread screening tool that utilizes material properties measured in an economical bench-scale test (ASTME1354) to predict performance of new FRP systems in full-scale testing such as ASTM E84, NFPA 285, and NFPA 286. Material developers may use this tool as a critical step in screening materials prior to full-scale testing.
