To aid the Greater Worcester Land Trust (GWLT) in the development of an infrastructure solution to cross Tatnuck Brook at Ada Street in Worcester, MA, we completed a structural design of a pedestrian bridge to meet accessibility and durability requirements. We collected data on site conditions, expected use cases, and other project constraints to develop multiple design options. We consulted with stakeholders including members of the local neighborhood, faculty at nearby Worcester State University, GWLT, and the Worcester Conservation Commission (WCC) to narrow and refine these options. Structural designs for the bridge, an approach ramp, and a lookout deck were completed and complied with American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards, provided ADA-compliant access to the bridge, and kept the bridge superstructure above 100-year flood levels. A cost estimate and set of drawings were presented to GWLT along with recommendations regarding the construction process.
