This project investigated eight structural systems for the design of a college dormitory building. The alternatives were compared on the basis of cost, constructability, building code requirements and lateral forces. Additional aspects of the project were the design of a sprinkler system, smoke control system, cladding system and column footing. The overall goal of the group was not only to gain understanding of structural design, but also to develop construction and fire safety strategies that are applicable to future construction projects.
