MM5 cluster performance optimization for improved aviation weather forecasts

Public

Weather simulation models require high performance computing solutions in order to be effective in operational environments. A goal of Lincoln Laboratory's Aviation Weather group is to develop an optimized computing solution that integrates Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) forecasts, such as MM5, into current FAA decision guidance tools. We developed a performance evaluation toolkit and used it to optimize the configuration of the hardware and software settings required to efficiency run this NWP system. Weather forecasts are now produced 30% faster.
