Evaluation of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bench Scale Specimen Sizes and Prediction of Full Scale Flame Spread Testing for Building Applications
PublicDownloadable Content
open in viewerThe International Building Code (IBC) limits flame spread for materials based on large scale ASTM E84 (Tunnel) testing. Unfortunately for Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer (FRP) manufacturers, Tunnel testing is not a cost effective way to develop materials. To make development affordable, use of the bench scale ASTM E1354 Cone Calorimeter (Cone) test is desired. FRP Cone standard samples often exhibit non 1D burning behavior. Cone sample burning behavior was analyzed by comparing standard and enlarged samples. A flame length model for material in the Tunnel test was created to simulate the burning behavior of the material. This model can be used as a screening tool for material development and for establishing compliance criteria for interior finish materials consistent with IBC requirements.
