Starting in 1998, the Forest Service Bureau of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) has sponsored a 50 million dollar reforestation project, the Proyecto de Reforestacion Puertoriqueno. Our involvement in this project, in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF), was to assess the effectiveness of this program to date. In seven weeks, we collected data from the reforested areas and from project participants, and looked for factors affecting the overall success of the program. Using this information, recommendations were developed to help the DNER and IITF enhance their current efforts and plan future reforestation projects.
