With media headlines including global warming, controversy in the Middle East, rumors of petroleum sources running dry, and consumers paying more and more for petroleum, Americans have come to question our strong dependence on oil. Status of the United States' Dependence on Oil, part one of a two-part review entitled Stemming the Oil Addiction, examines the sources of supply and demand, refining and distribution processes, and pricing. A critical analysis follows ultimately deciding whether the United States really needs to significanty reduce its oil consumption.
