The abuse of weight loss methods in athletics
PublicDownloadable Content
open in viewerThe growing epidemic of abuse of weight-loss methods among athletes is investigated, based on a review of the literature and on interviews with athletes and coaches. Fad diets, diet pills, diuretics, and eating disorders in amateur and professional athletics are discussed. Regulations, monitoring, and sanctions used to curb such practices/compulsions are also reported and analysed. I concluded that regulations need revision and more "teeth," and that more education on the serious effects of inappropriate weight loss methods is needed.
