The Activator protein-1 upregulated by neurotrophic peptides NMI-9236 and NMI-8933 is capable of transcriptional trans-activation

Neuroprotective peptides NMI-9236 and NMI-8933 are drugs designed for emergency stroke treatment. Prior research indicated that the neurotrophic peptides upregulate Activator Protein-1, a transcription factor implicated in the neuroprotective function of the drugs. The purpose of this major qualifying project was to determine whether this upregulated particle is functional, i.e., capable of transcriptional trans-activation. The results indicate that the upregulated AP-1 is functional. These results contribute to the ongoing effort to elucidate the drugs' molecular mechanisms of action.
