LOCK

The gun utilizes what is called a “Kabyle” lock, similar to a European style called the “snaphance”. A flint in the jaws of the lock strikes sparks from the steel arm that faces it to ignite the “priming charge” of gunpowder in the pan. On this style of lock, the striking steel and pan cover are separate units, differentiating them from a flintlock on which they are a single piece.  The lock is overlaid in brass panels with floral engraving.
