Swapping Stories: Gaining insight to cancer therapeutics and EGFR signaling from flies

open in viewerBreast cancer affects ~1 million new women yearly. Overexpression of ErbB2, a member of the EGFR family, is a causative factor in 30% of these cases and is targeted by the cancer drug Herceptin. Strikingly, studies of ErbB2 and the Drosophila EGFR have uncovered a close structural relationship. Using domain swaps between dEGFR and ErbB2, I have been investigating inhibition of dEGFR by the transmembrane molecule Kekkon1 with the hope that such insight may lead to novel cancer drugs.
