The effect of an osm-3 chemosensory mutation on surface
PublicThe nematode Caenorhabditis elegans changes its surface composition during development, such that an L1 surface antigen is turned off at a later larval stages in response to environmental signals. Worms with mutations in gene srf-6 display the L1 antigen at stages L1 through L4 (Constitutive Larval Display or CLD). Osm-3 mutations affect the worm's chemosensation. A mutation in the osm-3 gene was shown to block CLD in srf-6 mutant worms, indicating that osm-3 activity is required for srf-6 to have its effect.
