Manufacturing Bamboo Bicycle Frames with Molded Composite Joints

open in viewerBamboo bicycles are currently available throughout the world as a mode of cheap transportation in third world countries. Currently the process used for manufacturing these bicycles includes hand wrapping a composite layup around each joint, which is labor intensive. The objective of this project is to build a bamboo framed bicycle cheaper and easier to produce than the ones that are currently available. The result was machined aluminum molds attached to a jig fixture. This allows for the setting of a fiberglass epoxy matrix in much less time than hand wrapping. The joint was modeled in SolidWorks. Finite element analyses with normal static bike loads were done in ANSYS. The tooling was CNC machined by a group member on Haas machine tools using ESPRIT CAM software provided by DP Technology.
