Japan and its prefectures are currently facing the challenge of an aging population and shrinking workforce, resulting in higher costs and increased demand for publicly funded programs. Working with Professor Andrea Urushima of Kyoto Seika University, we explore the possibility of internationalization as a solution to the problems that Fukui Prefecture faces. Our exploratory research, interviews, and surveys into how internationalization has affected and been viewed by Fukui indicate that the population views it positively and continues to implement it but improvements can be made in what and how efforts are advertised. We provide recommendations on ways to encourage more local and foreign participation in internationalization and its research, as well as a website to aid in future research and the implementation of internationalization.
