Digital image processing at NASA Johnson Space Center

NASA space shuttles employ heat resistant tiles to protect the shuttle from extreme heat upon re-entry to the atmosphere. Damage to these tiles can compromise the effectiveness of the heat shielding thus endangering the shuttle. Such damage must be detected and repaired prior to shuttle re-entry. To that end, digital images may be taken of the tiles and analyzed for damage. In order to expedite this process, software can be used to automate the analysis and measurement of tile damage.
