The Epidermal Growth Factor or ErbB family of receptor tyrosine kinases has been the focus of cancer therapeutics based on their involvement in numerous cancer types, including lung, breast and brain. This pathway is conserved from humans to flies (Drosophila) making Drosophila a good model organism for ErbB cancer related studies. Toward this goal, transgenic flies were generated with ErbB3 and ErbB4 members of the ErbB family. Moreover, functional studies demonstrated that ErbB4 is indeed active in Drosophila providing a novel avenue for research opportunities in the field of cancer therapeutics.
