The Turks & Caicos Islands contain numerous salt ponds, or "salinas", which were used by the salt industry until its collapse in the 1960s. Since then, problems have arisen that include poor water quality, stagnation, and polluted runoff. The project objective was to design an approach for restoring these ponds. The methodology included field monitoring, hydraulic analyses, and hydrologic model simulation. The design recommendations consist of increasing circulation and tidal exchange by widening the existing channels, adding culverts, and installing windmills.
