Design of a testing device to predict the dynamic action of a piano key

Public

A number of variables in the manufacturing and regulation process of pianos produce deviations in the "feel", i.e., reaction force exerted on the finger by the piano key. A new testing device has been designed, manufactured, and validated to detect variations in adjustments of the components of a piano key that creates the appropriate "feel". Quantitatively analyzed dynamical data is used to evaluate the attributes of an existing piano's dynamic action. Evaluated data provides conclusions for adjusting key assemblies to yield enhanced accuracy in the current piano manufacturing and regulation process.
