NFPA Standards and Occupational Safety of First Responders

The research of this project concerned the applicability of various industry standards on the occupational safety of first responders in the emergency medical services field. The focus of the research was on the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) codes and standards. The author of this IQP is a voting member of the NFPA Technical Committee on Fire and Emergency Services Protective Clothing and Equipment - Electronic Safety Equipment. This report identifies the role played by fire departments in delivering emergency medical service (EMS) care. Additionally, it outlines the applicability of existing NFPA standards on EMS vehicles and equipment. Finally, a literature review of codes and standards regarding personal protective equipment (PPE) for first responders was generated.
