Train fire modeling in fire dynamic simulator

Public

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) performed a full-scale passenger train experiment. It was later modeled in Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) to show that a computer model may accurately predict results comparable to a full size scenario. This was facilitated by a better understanding of the relationship between material properties, fire involvement, and grid sensitivity. Further testing and analysis of this model were explored by comparing output data from the model to the actual data collected during the experiment. Although the FDS train model predicted comparable results to the actual train fire experiment, full scale testing should never be replaced by computer modeling.
