Porcine Circovirus Type 1 (PCV1) is a member of the Circoviridae family. The protein encoded by its third open reading frame (PCV1 VP3) displays onco-specific induction of apoptosis; localization signals have been implicated in this onco-specific activity. Site-directed mutagenesis was applied to assess the functionality of export sequences within PCV1 VP3. The cytoplasmic localization observed after the mutations raise many questions as to the functionality of these export sequences and the possible existence of non-classical sequences within PCV1 VP3.
