The effects of non-uniform fire on structural steel columns

Public

An experimental procedure used to create a non-uniform fire in a model-scale enclosure is described. Three steel columns were installed in the enclosure, and surface temperature data was obtained. The columns represented full-size columns from a sample rigid frame building that was designed as part of this project. Column loads were calculated and combined with the temperature data in finite element analysis to determine stresses and deformations within the columns. Possible impacts on future design methods are discussed.
