The Use of Iron-oxide Nanoparticles for Hyperthermia Cancer Treatment and Simultaneous MRI Monitoring

open in viewerThe overall goal of this project was to investigate the simultaneous use of magnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) for cancer treatment using hyperthermia as well as contrast agents that will allow MRI visualization of the particles within the tumor. Following characterization of the particles for use as both a therapeutic and MRI diagnostic agent, a strategy was designed for using MNPs in localized hyperthermia treatment of tumors; where MRI is used to both confirm the tumor uptake of the particles and as a tool to monitor the temperature changes in the tumor tissue during hyperthermia treatment.
