Improving The First Year College Experience for Introverts

Many introverts struggle in our society where extroversion is celebrated and considered the norm. Our project focuses on how first-year introverted students transition to college and how their overall experiences differ from extroverts. Particularly we examine the First-Year programs at WPI. We surveyed the first-year students at WPI and discovered that roughly 56.8% of first-year students are introverts. Introverts felt significantly less comfortable during orientation and felt a significantly less feeling of belonging than extroverts. Introverts stated desiring more free time, alternative activities, and additional ways to connect with others. Therefore, in order to make New Student Orientation a more welcoming and comfortable experience for introverts, we recommend providing more free time, offering alternative activities, and providing ways for students to connect one-on-one. Although our data and conclusions focus on improving WPI, these conclusions can be applied to other institutions.
