Proposal and design -- for a new Cross Street covered bridge

Public

The Cross Street Bridge in Canton, Maine, a narrow bridge built in the 1920s, is currently in disrepair and cannot support the full range of modern traffic loading. The abutments, located in the Whitney Brook flood plan, restrict the natural flow of the river and can contribute to flooding. The physical condition of the bridge is poor. A visual inspection performed by our team revealed that it has several holes and that the guardrails are severely corroded. The guardrails appear to have suffered damages from impact, as they are bent and warped in many areas. Our project seeks to develop a covered bridge design and proposal to replace Cross Street Bridge that can be submitted to the Wood in Transportation program for construction funding. Through archival research of prior designs and the use of modern engineering practices, we intend to design a superstructure that will both please the town of Canton aesthetically as well as attract WIT funding.
