Is artemisinin conjugated to sugar in hairy roots of Artemisia annua?

Public

To lower in planta toxicity many secondary products in plants are conjugated to sugars. Sugar-cleaving enzymes were used to investigate the possibility of artemisinin's conjugation to a sugar molecule. Only -glucosidase appeared to alter the in vivo levels of artemisinin. This suggests that the terpenoid may be conjugated to glucose.
