open in viewerThe goal of this project was to design and analyze an advanced enclosure assembly for a lunar habitat in the permanently shadowed region of Shackleton Crater. To achieve this goal the team began by creating several preliminary wall assemblies using materials designed to combat the lunar conditions. The designs were validated through a variety of analyses on the thermal, radiation, and lunar dust resistance, weight, and structural capacity of each concept. The results of these analyses were used to select a final enclosure assembly that best fit the needs of the project. Finally, the team created a physical model of the enclosure and a virtual model of a potential full building to assess the feasibility of utilizing the wall assembly in a complete structure on the Moon.
