Bar Island is a unique island owned by Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine, which is only accessible for 3 to 4 hours around low tide. No research has been done on Bar Island since 2006, nearly 20 years ago. Our project sought to understand visitor dynamics on Bar Island to assist the National Park Service. This was done through GPS mapping, surveys, interviews, and observation. Our research found that visitation to Bar Island has changed and increased significantly; visitors arrive uninformed, with little knowledge of the tide windows, and many go on unofficial trails. We recommend adding informational signage and conducting a future environmental study on Bar Island.
