Automated Uniaxial Tension System for Mechanically Active Tissue Culture

open in viewerThe Gaudette Laboratory’s fibrin sutures deliver stem cells to infarcted myocardium with high engraftment rates, yet seeded cells remain immature and incapable of generating sufficient contractile force. The device cyclically loads seeded sutures in an incubator at 10-15% strain and frequency of 1-3 Hz, which research suggests, promotes stem cell development into mature cardiomyocytes. The design additionally makes live imaging possible without termination of the experiment. This device allows researchers to further study the effect of cyclic strain on cardiomyocyte maturation.
