The Effects of Vitamin Supplementation on Bipolar Depression
PublicThis 12-week long double blind randomized study explored the effects of Vitamin D supplementation on depression, anxiety, and mania symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder. Participants received a daily Vitamin D supplement or placebo, and their initial Vitamin D level was measured. Depression, anxiety, and mania symptoms were measured biweekly. Preliminary results are based on baseline Vitamin D levels because the study is ongoing. These indicated that baseline levels significantly influenced depression and anxiety symptoms, and that these symptoms significantly decreased over the study. This change cannot yet be attributed to the vitamin supplementation. Better understanding Vitamin D’s efficacy as a treatment for bipolar depression could lead to more treatment options in the future.
